What Does A School Counselor Do?
As a School Counselor, we assist ALL students in areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career readiness.  One of Ms. Schulz goals is to promote healthy personal and educational growth for every student.   

Gone are the days of school counselors sitting in their office simply handing out college applications, making schedule changes for students who want to drop a class or entering data for the school district.  Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help ALL students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. (American School Counselors Association, 2013)

  Ms. Schulz looks forward to working with students on a daily basis to ensure that they are reaching their potential, setting and achieving academic and career goals, and have less barriers to their education.

School Counseling Essential Learning Objectives 

School Counselors work with student to help improve and plan behaviors that incorporate social, academic, and career domains. Below are the learning objectives for students throughout their years at the Bangor School District.

Academic Development Domain

Content Standard A: Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to successful learning in school and across the life span.

  • Learning Objective 1: Demonstrate an understanding of and responsibility for self as a learner.
  • Learning Objective 2: Acquire the skills for improving effectiveness as a learner.
  • Learning Objective 3: Demonstrate responsibility for achieving school success.

Content Standard B: Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial postsecondary options, including college.

  • Learning Objective 1: Apply the skills necessary to improve learning and make successful academic transitions.
  • Learning Objective 2: Apply knowledge in establishing and achieving academic goals.

Content Standard C: Students will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work, and to life at home and in the community.

Personal/Social Development Domain

Content Standard D: Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self, others and individuals from different cultural backgrounds.

  • Learning Objective 1: Acquire and demonstrate self-awareness and self-acceptance as it relates to understanding oneself.
  • Learning Objective 2: Acquire and demonstrate acceptable interpersonal skills as it relates to understanding oneself and others.

Content Standard E: Students will make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve goals.

  • Learning Objective 1: Apply self-knowledge in the decision-making or goal setting process.

Content Standard F: Students will use safety and wellness skills.

  • Learning Objective 1: Acquire and demonstrate self-management and responsibility for health promoting behavior.

Career Development Domain

Content Standard G: Students will acquire the self-knowledge necessary to make informed career decisions.

  • Learning Objective 1: Develop the ability to make informed career decisions based on self-knowledge.
  • Learning Objective 2: Develop positive interpersonal skills necessary to be effective in the world of work.
  • Learning Objective 3: Integrate personal growth and change into career development.

Content Standard I: Students will employ career management strategies to achieve future career success and satisfaction.

  • Learning Objective 3: Recognize how principles of equal opportunity, equity, respect, inclusiveness, and fairness affect career planning and management.
