Bangor Recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Wisconsin RtI Center Bangor, WI-June 8, 2021– Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Wisconsin RtI Center has recognized Bangor at the Bronze level for successfully building a school-wide equitable, multi-level system of supports aimed at closing achievement in Reading and Behavior. National research shows that full implementation of an equitable system leads to improved student outcomes. By establishing equitable, multi-level systems of supports, Wisconsin schools like Bangor are increasing the consistency of effective instruction for all students, building staff knowledge and skills to support all learners, using data to more quickly identify and provide support for students, and shifting to a proactive culture that supports stronger relationships with students, their families, and our communities. This recognition program encourages schools and districts during the construction of their systems and helps them celebrate progress toward full implementation. As schools continue the work, they will map out how to sustain their systems and continue to build increasing levels of student supports in additional subject areas until the system is fully in place. For more information on the school’s efforts, visit [school website address]. To learn more about the Wisconsin RtI Center’s Recognized Schools Program, visit www.wisconsinrticenter.org.

Author Jay Heinrichs visited with Argument and Debate students this morning. Students have been reading chapters from his book Thank You For Arguing for class. One of their takeaways for the day is that it's important for an audience to like and trust you if you want them to listen to you. Heinrichs also stressed the importance of pausing to really listen to someone instead of trying to talk right away. It was a great class!

Help Improve Internet Speeds in Our Community in Three Clicks https://speed.measurementlab.net/#/ To help improve internet speeds across Wisconsin, the Department of Public Instruction is teaming up with Measurement Lab, a non-profit broadband advocacy organization, to test home internet connection speeds. You can help out by testing your home internet speed with Measurement Lab’s broadband speed test. All it takes is three clicks--it’s that easy. Why Is This Important? The data will give the Governor’s Task Force on Broadband Access (and other broadband task groups) the information they need to target improvements where internet speeds and performance are poor. Your Input Is Critical In order to get an accurate picture of the state, we need a lot of accurate data. That’s where you come in. The more people take the broadband internet speed test, the clearer picture we can get of where internet speeds need the most help. To get started: On a device connected to your home internet, click on the link to the M-Lab broadband speed test. Agree to the Data Policy. Click Begin to start the test. Consider running the test multiple times, at different times of day, as your internet speed can often vary throughout the day. Thank you for your help in improving internet speeds in our community!

A few months ago a group of Bangor students, grades 6-12, participated in a virtual honors choir experience. Over the course of around 12 hours they rehearsed, did some bonding, learned about the voice and explored the music with discussions and even meeting with the composers of their songs, while preparing to record their portion of the concert. They all worked very hard and had to do a lot of it very independently. I am so proud of what they've accomplished with this. The concert just premiered on Youtube last night, so feel free to check it out! https://youtu.be/HDqflSiNKmI

The Bangor School District is beginning the process of hiring a full-time district administrator to start work on July 1, 2021. The School Board enlisted the services of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards to assist in facilitating the search process. The Bangor Board of Education is interested in gathering input from staff and the community related to the hiring of a new district administrator. A Community Survey is one of the tools being used to help gather this information from various stakeholders in the district. The information gathered from the Community Survey will assist the board in the creation of a profile outlining the skills and characteristics sought in the candidates for the position and the development of questions to be used in the interviews. The Community Survey can be accessed beginning December 11th on the Bangor School District Website. The link to the survey will remain open through December 22nd at 4:00 PM. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BangorComm2020

Every year, thousands of students across the state of Wisconsin audition for the WSMA Honors Project. It is a rigorous audition process that puts their musicianship to the test. Only a few hundred are chosen to be a part of this Honors Project and complete a week long summer camp to learn their music. This normally culminates in a performance at the state music convention, but this year things are a bit different. Last year a small group of BHS students auditioned for this and one was accepted among the top HS musicians in the state, Jadyn Larson who was accepted into the treble choir. WSMA has put together a virtual performance/concert of all their music and it is available to the public! Below is the information of how you can watch it (the treble choir is the second group to perform) and see what these great students, including one of our own, created in this time of COVID. Rick Bierbrauer, agricultural educator at the Bangor School District in Bangor, Wis., has received the Outstanding Early Career Teacher award from the Wisconsin Association of Agricultural Educators (WAAE). Mr. Bierbrauer was presented this award at the WAAE Professional Development Conference held virtually June 29-July 2, 2020. The first five years of teaching are similar to a roller coaster- some amazing highs, stomach dropping falls, with a handful of crazy twists and turns throughout- but an exhilarating ride in the end upon reflection. We would like to recognize some of our early career teachers whose vision for their profession utilizes the twists, turns, surprises and joys of everyday teaching to make them outstanding in their schools. Rick strives to create a classroom where nobody is afraid to ask questions, make mistakes, and fail- and how can we do this together. He models this philosophy in his daily life and the organizations he partners with. Rick always asks questions, problem solves and implements solutions. When Rick started at Bangor, no agriculture classroom existed. Through his perseverance, Bangor boasts not only a physical classroom, but a 20x40 greenhouse, numerous hydroponic systems, orchard, vineyard and community garden. The creation of community partnerships with key businesses and grants financed most of these experiential learning activities. Rick developed 9 new classes, allowing the FFA to grow more than 300% and maintain this level of membership. Mr. Bierbrauer shares his talents with WAAE as committee chair of the Instructional Kits committee, presents workshops at PDC, and currently serves as the Section 3 Vice President.

To the Bangor Class of 2020 and Families, Earlier this spring we were hopeful that we could still have our in-person graduation ceremony on August 1. We realize how important and special the graduation ceremony is for seniors and their families. Unfortunately, due to the increase in COVID cases in the past month we are no longer able to have the in-person graduation ceremony. We have spent time over the past month looking at various options (outdoors, spacing, etc.) but any ceremony would still have to fit the parameters provided by the county. You will see a media release below from the School Districts of Bangor, Holmen, LaCrosse, Onalaska, and West Salem. Since we are all faced with the same parameters, all of the high schools have canceled our in-person ceremonies. We will have a virtual graduation ceremony which will be released as soon as it can be finished. We will also look at having a drive up diploma pickup after consulting with the health department and local police department. There will be further information regarding this at a later date. Rick Muellenberg Principal, Bangor Middle/High School La Crosse County 2020 Graduates and Families, As many of you know, the La Crosse County Health Department currently has La Crosse County at a Red Level (Severe Risk). We are following the recommendations of the county closely as it pertains to our students. As a result, the public high schools in La Crosse County regretfully must cancel our in-person graduation ceremony plans. We know that many students, families, and school district staff members look forward to this event each year and we have made this decision with a heavy heart. Principals from each public high school in La Crosse County will be in touch with families with any other information pertaining to their school. Sincerely, Bangor HS, Holmen HS, La Crosse Central HS, La Crosse Logan HS, Onalaska HS, and West Salem HS
